Facts about Staten Island

The first recorded European contact with the island was in 1520 by Italian explorer Giovanni Verrazzano. After many battles with the Lenape Indians, the Dutch finally created a settlement on the island in 1661. The island played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War. In 1898, Richmond County (later named Staten Island) became one of the five boroughs of the City of Greater New York.
