About Kitchen Magic

The Story of Kitchen Magic…and the Gnomes

It was 1979 and a smart business idea called cabinet refacing captured Jost Fleck’s imagination. “Joe,” as he preferred to be called, recognized refacing as new, affordable way for homeowners to transform their dated kitchen while keeping their existing cabinetry intact.

Joe’s wife Reine and their three daughters, Cindy, Renate and Lotte helped open a tiny, low-budget basement office in Allentown, Pennsylvania nicknamed the “Mole Hole.”

He decided he would back this new product and process with a Lifetime of Home Ownership Warranty and made his first sales on the power of his enthusiasm alone. From his second-hand desk, Joe co-coordinated the installation of the very first Kitchen Magic kitchens.

That secondhand desk (yes, we still have that old workhorse) was given new life when Joe eventually passed it on to his son-in-law, Brett Bacho- Lotte’s husband- who joined forces with Joe and Reine in 1992. Working side by side with Joe for over a dozen years, Brett learned-by doing- every aspect of the business.

An engineer by trade, Brett envisioned the company manufacturing many of its own products instead of purchasing them, and in doing so producing superior quality with speed and efficiency.

That advancement coupled with continuous improvement through technology have been cornerstones of the company’s ability to meet and exceed customers’ expectations.

As President and CEO since 1998, Brett has built and leads the company forward with a talented leadership team that includes his brother Chad, serving as IT Director for nearly 30 years. The family business continues to keep a people first focus on both customers and employees.

Now, over 60,000 transformed kitchens, over 40 years of experience later and a company culture of collaboration and learning, Kitchen Magic employees have, year after year, voted Kitchen Magic a Top Workplace in the Lehigh Valley.

The Magic of the Humble Gnome

We are often asked why gnomes are part of our logo, and there is good reason (beyond their cuteness). A longstanding traditional European symbol of craftsmanship and handiness, gnomes are adept, bright and highly valued for their creative ingenuity. Enterprising gnomes are always working behind the scenes to safeguard and care for their environment and are nurturing, selfless, happy creatures who lead simple lives. Though they carefully observe their surroundings, gnomes are never seen.

Jost and Reine Fleck chose the hardworking gnome as the symbol of Kitchen Magic’s quality craftsmanship. Reine’s late father, Stanley Waite, a professional commercial artist, brought them to life when he illustrated the original Kitchen Magic logo. Since 1979, our logo, like high standard of excellence, has remained unchanged.
