History

The Town of Poughkeepsie was established in 1788. During the American Revolutionary War, Poughkeepsie became the sitting capital of New York. New York's 1788 ratification of the American Constitution occurred in the Poughkeepsie Courthouse on Market Street. Poughkeepsie flourished during the 19th Century, particularly as a central hub for shipping due to its location on the Hudson River.
