How to Get Perfect Kitchen Measurements

If you’re planning to remodel your kitchen or you’re moving into a new house, you might want to know some tips on how to get your ideal kitchen set up so that working in your kitchen is a smooth experience.

Whether you’re hiring professional kitchen remodeling contractors or taking on the task yourself, keep in mind that one inch off can cause major problems later on. That’s why we've compiled a list of standard organizational guidelines and kitchen measurements you can take note of to build a functional and beautiful cooking area.

How to measure a kitchen?

You may have heard of the work triangle, which consists of the cooking area, dining area, and the sink. Ideally, the work triangle should be less than 6.4 meters, and it should not exceed 7.9 meters as it becomes inefficient when moving from one function/place to another.

A kitchen serves three primary functions: storing, prepping, and cooking.

1. Storage

At the kitchen entry area, it is recommended to place the refrigerator and store dry goods. The distance between the pantry and countertop should be around 38 to 61 centimeters as it will enable you to easily put down items after taking them out from the refrigerator or freezer. This gives enough space to move around. You can store dry goods and kitchen essentials such as brooms, paper towels, supplies, as well as store loose items such as plastic bags or containers in drawers within the pantry. Cabinets can be used to store cooking equipment and aids like mixing bowls, measuring utensils, and other items that help to prepare your meals.

2. Preparation

It is best to locate your preparation and cleaning space around the sink and allow around 45 to 92 centimeters of countertop space on either or both sides of the sink. As you will usually be taking out items like bowls, plates, and utensils at the preparation area, you should ensure that there are at least 92 centimeters of empty and free countertop space in a small kitchen. If you have a bigger kitchen, there is less to worry about as you will have much more space for food preparation. The reason why many homeowners have a kitchen island is for this exact purpose, which is to enjoy food preparation with an uncluttered and well-lit space.

3. Cooking

In general, the cooking appliances, cooking pots, and frying pans can be centered around the cooking hood, hobs, and wall ovens. This will help ease up space for your preparation areas and centralize things required for the cooking process. You may leave 53 to 92 centimeters of countertop space on either side of the cooking top. Seasonings, potholders, and breadboards can be located in nearby drawers and cupboards for easy access. Table and serving ware can be placed nearer the dining table.
